Downloading from network share to the device?

I see there is the ability to download using a URL, but the

smb://

and

nfs://

do not appear to be supported.

However we can connect to SMB under "File Servers" but it plays them only, there is no option to download.

Is it possible to download files to the device using a network share?

You will be able to download media from SMB and NFS servers in the next update just like you already can for UPnP and ftp.
