Converting avi to mp4, audio is missing

I try to convert avi files (imported from DV cassettes) to mp4 format. I have tried several settings but usually the video convertion goes OK but there is no audio.
If I put the output profile "Video - H.264 + MP3 (MP4)". The video looked OK but no audio. When I put the output profile "Video for Youtube SD" there was audio but the scaling of the was not 16:9 which I wanted.
What settings should I use?

Try with a nightly build:
https://nightlies.videolan.org

Or use a dedicated video tool such as AviDemux:
