Struggling to copy videos onto iPad from Mac (Big Sur 11.5.2)

I'm really struggling to copy videos onto my iPad Air 2 from my Mac (Big Sur 11.5.2).
I'm connected up by a lightning lead.
I've got two windows open in Finder and I'm dragging the video file (or folder containing the video) from my Mac to FILES tab on the iPad and dropping the file onto VLC icon.
A lot of the time nothing happens. Sometimes a file will transfer. Sometimes I have to press Sync to get it to do something. Sometimes I have to unplug the cable.
Again I stress most of the time NOTHING transfers over at all.

Any thoughts please?
