Black screen- not recording

I am hoping someone can help me with this. I am an actor and am trying to record some of my scenes from a streaming services (Amazon and Netflix) to put together my reel. I used VLC successfully a couple of years ago, but cannot get it to work now. When I try and record the scene, I get the recurring and diminishing screen shot. I got to the scene and click record and still don't get anything. Please help!
