transcoding (exporting) video from a DVD-RAM disk

Postby lsolesbee » 12 Jul 2021 15:28

is there a discussion group about the old DVD-RAM format and how to export as MP4 or Mpeg from various CHAPTERS and how to select the sections or chapters to transcode? For example, I copied the files from the disk, there is a folder, DVD_RTAV, in which there are three files: VR_MANGR.BUP, VR_MANGR.IFO and VR_MANGR.VRO.
open the VRO file with VLC.app.
in some regards it shows the video is just over 2 hours, but in actual playback mode, it's just over 6 hours. I must have recorded it [on a Panasonic DVD Recorder] in the 6-hour mode, capturing 3 full VHS 2 hour tapes that had been recorded on my old VHS Camcorder. Originals from the 1980s. Captured on the DVD-RAM disk in 2003.

is there a way to select sections of the video by time or something to export one section at time until i get the entire 6 hours?

or can i create chapters or bookmarks to help...

MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Mid 2014) Mac High Sierra, 10.13.6
I was using VLC 1.1.5 but just upgraded to 3.0.16

i tried using the Convert / Stream adding the VR_MANGR.VRO file, selecting MP4 but it resulted in an M4V file, which is video only, and just over 10 minutes

SUCCESS!!
while i could see the video from a DVD-RAM disk with Quicktime Player, VLC, AnyMP4, Filmora, Elmedia, Video Converter, Vidmore, 5kplayer and more, most had no method of exporting or transcoding. VLC did have a way to export, but not easy. Only in VLC could i skim and actually see the video beyond 2-hour mark. All the rest could only handle the 1st 2-hours. Most of my DVD-RAM disk wer just in 2-hour mde, but the important one, with all the family "treasures" of holiday activity were recorded on 6-hour mode. Only VLC could see that, but unable to transcode any of it.

DAWN: By chance watching a youtube on "How To Fix Left-Speaker-Only QuickTime Mic Recordings using HandBrake" by Michael Kinney | Pushing Pixels

HANDBRAKE !!!

Handbrake was able to "see" the entire 6-hours of the DVD-RAM and export it in a number of formats
