Complete Novice needs help

I have many MiniDV tapes that I want to upload and convert to .mp4. I believe VLC can do this without any loss of quality but I can't seem to make it happen. I have connected my Sony PCR DC110E to my MacBook - I know the connection is ok because I can upload using iMovie - but I can't seem to find out how to do a similar upload using VLC. I would appreciate any help that anyone can provide. Many thanks in advance.

Sorry, this is not something VLC can do. iMovie is a great tool for this purpose.
