[SOLVED] VLC 3.3.0 - Anonymous SMB connections no longer work

Postby Rickers123 » 06 Oct 2020 01:10

Hi,
I like the UI updates to 3.3.0. One issue is that anonymous (public?) SMB connections no longer work (or maybe there is a trick to getting them to work). I keep getting prompted for credentials. Any ideas?
Regards, Rick

If you are using a Windows server, suggest ensuring that SMBv1.0 server is checked in "Windows features on or off". If using a Linux server, try adding this line to samba.conf global: "server min protocol = NT1"

Thanks for the suggestions, but using SMB shares on macOS. I figured out the problem, though. I connected two Macs on my network with a Thunderbolt cable (which I do for large backups). This created a bridge with 169.254.*.* addresses. When I did this, the server's *.local DNS name was repointed to its 169.254 address which, apparently, isn't listening for SMB requests (with how mobile devices discover them anyway). Once I unplugged the cable all was working again.
