Converting faulty DVD to MP4

Postby megadyne » 18 Sep 2020 09:22

I've got a DVD that I want to convert to MP4. I can read the DVD using VLC, with the following exception: a continuous playback hangs at 28 minutes (14% of the total playtime). However, if I click the mouse in the progress bar at 29 minutes (or indeed at any time after 28 minutes) the track will continue playing to the end.

(As an aside, if I try to just copy and paste the raw VOB files using Windows, it also hangs at 14% complete. )

It seems I might have 2 options: to try to override the glitch and continue the conversion regardless; or to try to do a conversion for 0 to 28 minutes, followed by a second conversion from 29 minutes to end. I can patch the two clips together later.

Trouble is I don't know how to do either of those things. :-(

Any suggestions most gratefully received. Thanks.

Thanks, I've downloaded Handbrake. On a first attempt it also crashed (just closed down completely) at 14% and wouldn't copy the later part of the file. (Even though with VLC I can watch the rest of the video). However, I'll play around with options and see if I can get a result. I'll report back.

Didn't manage to get Handbrake to do the job, but maybe that was my lack of experience. Very glad to have found that piece of software.

In the end I just used the red 'record' button with VLC to record the section after the disc error. Not a very elegant solution (I just left the computer running during the evening to capture the recording), but it worked.

Thanks again for help.

If the media is damaged, the OS is responsible for the read retries count on default read.
There's nothing playback software can do.
Use dvdbackup with -r parameters
