VLC plays MIDI file (with sf2) 2 semitones higher than normal

Postby mlig » 04 Aug 2020 12:48

Hi everyone,
I'm using .sf2 soundfonts to play MIDI Haydn sonatas.
VLC plays MIDI files (with .sf2) 1.5 or 2 semitones higher than normal!
I tried with others sf2 instruments (piano, cello, choirs and so one), always 2 semitones higher.
- Why?
- Can someone gives a fix?
Thanks a lot
mlig

Which soundfont are you using ?
Also provide a MIDI file exposing this issue.

Hi,
I'm using different soundfonts as said in the first message (all .sf2).
-piano_Full Grand Piano[25-piano-sf.rar].sf2 for piano
-KBH_Real_and_Swell_Choir(TB).sf2 for choir music
...

A Haydn score: sonata_24_1_(c)iscenko.mid (from http://www.kunstderfuge.com/-/midi.asp? ... scenko.mid)
Result:
With Musescore and Myriad Melody assistant (and they own soundfonts): perfect in tune
With VLC: 1.5 or 2 semitones higher

For choir scores it's exactly the same (1.5 or 2 semitones higher)

Weird isn't?

(Sorry no attachments possible for a mp3 demo file)

I can't reproduce the issue, are you sure you don't have an added accidental, a bad transposition or an altered tuning in MuseScore ?
I've tried with the default MuseScore_General.sf3 and Merlin-8mbgm_plus13.sf2.
BTW, what is your OS ?

I've tried on two different computers and I still can't reproduce the issue.
Something must have been changed somewhere in your setup.

Hi,
Thanks a lot for your help.
I chose to uninstall VLC (with Revo) / restart / reinstall / reinstall prefs, sf2, etc
and now happily it's returned to normal. This issue shall stay a strange weird mystery :)

Thanks again
Best regs

I bet you didn't realize you had changed the playback speed

No, no worries. I know where in the preferences and sometimes I use this :)
In addition, the problem arose only with midi files and .sf2 soundfonts, never with other files
