Connecting Mac pro to Airturn peddle using VLC

Hello I am new to posting. I am in a band and have decided to use videos to accompany our performance. We have created videos to go with each song. The videos were created in iMovie and to be played on a Mac Laptop (pro) just purchased. I am hoping to control it with an AirTurn BT-200/S4 peddle. I have transferred the movies (MP4) from I movie to VLC. When I push the first 2 buttons in the VLC playlist will move the choice forward and backward how ever I can't get play/ pause to work. The buttons 3 and 4 do nothing. However if I manually start the movie the first 2 buttons move the volume up and down. I contacted Airturn and they said I would have to contact someone at VLC to talk me through the hot keys. Can anyone help me please. I have invested 2 days and I am still at the starting line.
