VLC won't open in new "space"

Postby jbourgui » 22 Jan 2020 02:26

Running VLC 3.0.8 on OSX 10.14.6. I've set "Start in Fullscreen" and "Use the native fullscreen mode" options to both be checked.

The behavior that used to work that I'm hoping to re-set up is that when I start a video, it automatically goes fullscreen into a different "space" (virtual desktop, ala Mission Control). It used to do that for me, but I had to trash my preferences to troubleshoot something else, and now I can't get it working again! What it does now is automatically go fullscreen, but on the monitor in Desktop 1. I want it to automatically create/open Desktop 2 when it goes fullscreen.

Help! :)

Cheers,

-joe

I think the OS puts the window in fullscreen using that space where the window was previously.

Unfortunately Apple does not really provide a way to select the space an app should go fullscreen with, as far as I know.

I somehow fixed the issue myself by some combination of dragging VLC to a new space when it was fullscreen, exiting and restarting and now it works... It didn't work the first couple times, so not exactly sure what I did differently to make it work...??? :/ I wish there was documentation about this somewhere!

Had similar issue where the green + didn't create a new 'space' like it does for other apps. Solved by:

Open vlc
Lanuch 'mission control' - (default 3 finger swipe up on trackpad)
mouse to top panel to expand 'spaces' area
click + on right of spaces panel to create new space
drag VLC window to new space
full screen there

*edit* - while this doesn't start the app in another space, it does open in a new one after i hite the green + on the video window now. This is on macOS 10.15.7
