Can't download/stream online video

Postby LeonardoM » 15 Aug 2019 23:35

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to download a video that is streamed online through VLC, but I keep failing.
Before using VLC, first thing I did was to check the page source to find the video source, so I opened the video in a separate tab, and tried to download the video by simply left clicking on it and selecting "download video". As a result, I get a simple .m3u file of 1KB of data. Definitely not the video, which should be more like 2GB. And this is what led me to start looking for alternative ways to download it, i.e VLC. Needless to say, I couldn't find any useful guide on the web - so far.
In order to simplify this troubleshooting, I'll post some screenshot of the several steps I've taken, to see if any of you can help me find a mistake, and eventually find a solution.

1) I opened the video source in a separate tab, using web inspector.

As you can see, there is no real .m3u or .mpeg or any other extension apart from .ism , which, unfortunately, is not a downloadable file without the rest of the link after the extension. So, like I said before, I just left clicked on the video and downloaded the related (1KB) file.
Here's the complete file name:

2) I opened this file with a text editor, and this is what's inside:

Again, no real "http:// **** .(video extension) " to paste into VLC for streaming the video

3) At this point, the only "http:// ***** " I saw is the original video link, on top of the browser's text field (see first screenshot) so this is the link I used to try and stream/download the file with VLC.

As you can see, I pasted the link onto VLC's URL and also onto the Media Resource Locator - this one is added automatically by vlc - checked "Stream output", and then went on to it's settings.

4) Then I simply selected where I wanted to download the file - in this case, my desktop - and finally the Encapsulation Method (extension) of the video to MPEG 4. I don't think transcoding option is needed, so I left it blank. Later on, I tried activating it, but that still results in nothing.

5) Unfortunately, as a result I get a .mp4 , 161 bytes file. Again, not the real video.

As I said in the beginning, it makes no difference trying to stream it instead of downloading it only: it just won't work, connect to the real source.
If anyone could help me out with this, I'd be very grateful, because I checked several guides online, but none seem to address my specific issue!

Thanks a lot for reading the entire post, and hopefully for helping me find a solution.
