Disabling subtitles

I have VLC for Android on my tablet, and it works great.

I downloaded VLC from the Windows Store for my laptop thinking it would be similar (VLC for Windows, not the store version, works great, btw).

My problem is that the VLC from the Windows store has subtitles enabled. Every video I play with subtitles, the subtitles will show up even if I disabled them in the previous video. I don't need subtitles on 95% of my videos, but I can't find anywhere to turn them off. I can disable them for one video, but when the next one starts, the subtitles are back and I have to disable them again.

How do I disable them permanently?
