I’ve enjoyed VLC for years on my old Macbook Pro. Now I just graduated to a new XS Max iphone from a 5s expressly for watching movies with VLC during travel in foreign languages with subs for the purpose of language learning. Before getting the new phone, I created large, very rich resolution mkv files (Apple 2160p60 4k HEVC Surround) with sometimes as much as 9 audio files and 5 or 6 different subtitle languages. (Hi res for future use with future monitors and TVs). It's taken a while with my 2009 Macbook Pro’s processing speed, but so far I’ve done Shrek and a complete season of Game of Thrones. The Shrek mkv came in at a whopping 5.54 GB while the Thrones are about 3 GB each.
I actually installed VLC on the 5s iphone only a few days before getting the new XS Max. VLC was therefore on the new phone after I synched it with itunes. Do I have the correct version of VLC for the new phone? It’s 3.1.9 (325).
I moved Shrek and a few Thrones MKVs onto the phone via VLCs sharing via wifi. VLC will play the files and I can change the audio and subs, but besides the regular freezing, I cannot reliably rewind or fast forward.
Are the files too big and rich for VLC and/or iOS? By the way, I also moved VOBs of Field of Dreams (3.9 GB) to the phone with VLC sharing via wifi and they play, rewind, and FF perfectly. (except that I have to play the VOBs individually.)
Anyway, I take my language learning pretty seriously, and I’ve found audio and subs in the target language to be by far the best way to learn and maintain a foreign language. I’m bringing back my French and Spanish with the hope of later acquiring Portuguese in my ripe old age -55yrs old
I’d love to solve this problem. The problem with MP4 files is you evidently have to burn in the subs, and, for each movie, I would have to have a separate video file for each language.
