Cannot enable Upnp on Macbook pro

Postby moxley » 29 Apr 2019 04:17

I have a 2018 Macbook pro 15" w/touch bar.

Cannot enable UPNP. Works on every other device I have, windows machines, Iphones, Ipads....Ive tried resetting preferences, completely removing all traces and re-installing.... It just will not work.

I see others have run into this before, but haven't seen an actual solution. Is there a solution for this?

I have the same problem as I reported in another thread. I tried the trial version of ArkMC on my MacBook Air and that is able to see the UPnP servers on my NAS. It seems that VLC is unable to replicate what ArkMC can do.

Thanks for the response Felix.

Is the cause known? Any plans to address it?

We've found a workaround for now using FTP, but it's slower and limited for what we're using it for.....

In any event, I really appreciate and love the software and donate periodically (just did so and got a neat new cone) and would like to urge others to do so..

Thanks,

Jeremy

Well, VLC certainly does so on IOS and other platforms. I dont think this is a case of "unable," Im sure there's a reason, it may be that it's not a quick/easy fix or they have other more pressing issues to deal with at the moment.

Right now as a workaround I am using the bonjour network discovery which finds the server and connects via FTP - doing it that way works, It's not as fast or as elegant as it is on IOS or other platforms but as home media NAS's are becoming more widely used im sure eventually they'll find a way - it's becoming a more important feature by the day.

Im sure there are other applications, but I like VLC - it really does everything and is stable and tested, so im going to donate and have some faith that they'll work it out eventually.

The problem is that VLC for Mac is listening on the wrong network interface when looking for UPnP shares. It uses the bridge to connect to the touch bar, which of course never exposes any UPnP feature. On iOS, we use a different UPnP stack (and there is no Touch Bar), so the problem does not exist.

I don't have a clever solution to this problem as of yet.

This will be fixed in 3.0.7. We finally found a fix for this embarrassing issue.
