VLC won't parse unicode M3U's?

Postby drfeelgood » 04 Dec 2005 10:30

M3U's play fine when reffering to files with only ASCII letters. But a similar M3U containing umlauts like the one below won't play at all. The files play well when added individually, however.

Code: Select all

#EXTM3U #EXTINF:213,Einstürzende Neubauten - Ich gehe jetzt [01] Einstürzende Neubauten - Ich gehe jetzt.mp3 #EXTINF:822,Einstürzende Neubauten - Perpetuum Mobile [02] Einstürzende Neubauten - Perpetuum Mobile.mp3 #EXTINF:273,Einstürzende Neubauten - Ein leichtes leises Säuseln [03] Einstürzende Neubauten - Ein leichtes leises Säuseln.mp3 #EXTINF:373,Einstürzende Neubauten - Selbstportrait mit Kater [04] Einstürzende Neubauten - Selbstportrait mit Kater.mp3 #EXTINF:241,Einstürzende Neubauten - Boreas [05] Einstürzende Neubauten - Boreas.mp3 #EXTINF:555,Einstürzende Neubauten - Ein seltener Vogel [06] Einstürzende Neubauten - Ein seltener Vogel.mp3 #EXTINF:224,Einstürzende Neubauten - Ozean und Brandung [07] Einstürzende Neubauten - Ozean und Brandung.mp3 #EXTINF:249,Einstürzende Neubauten - Paradiesseits [08] Einstürzende Neubauten - Paradiesseits.mp3 #EXTINF:280,Einstürzende Neubauten - Youme & Meyou [09] Einstürzende Neubauten - Youme & Meyou.mp3 #EXTINF:246,Einstürzende Neubauten - Der Weg ins Freie [10] Einstürzende Neubauten - Der Weg ins Freie.mp3 #EXTINF:315,Einstürzende Neubauten - Dead Friends (Around the Corner) [11] Einstürzende Neubauten - Dead Friends (Around the Corner).mp3 #EXTINF:223,Einstürzende Neubauten - Grundstück [12] Einstürzende Neubauten - Grundstück.mp3

Should have mentioned this is with VLC for Win 0.8.4 on XP SP2, BTW....

Same issue persists in 0.8.5-test3: Similar m3u's with only "english" characters play fine, while this containing letters with umlauts won't play at all. This should really be fixed....

There's little chance that we can arrange a fix within the 0.8.5 release time frame.

You should ensure your playlist is encoded in UTF-8 instead rather than Windows-1252.

Yes. Thanks. It works with UTF-8 encoded M3U files, both DOS (CR/LF) and UNIX (LF) filetypes, and both with or without BOM. That's good. The original (problematic) playlist are Winamp-compatible M3U as written by EAC.

This is one of the main problems with M3U, and a big reason why it should be deprecated.
Don't use PMs for support questions.
