VLC 3.0.3 >> Disable Auto Open/Expand Media Library folders/playlists

Postby edtion » 03 Jun 2018 12:22

I got an update today from I think 2.26, to 3.0.

Problem: When VLC Starts, it automatically opens folders and playlists inside the Media Library, converting them from single items to folders containing sub-items.

Goal: I want to disable this, so that I have to manually open them, otherwise they stay as single items (not folders)

Story:
When I opened VLC, all my items in the Media Library were expanded.
I keep them closed, so I can add the folders to the playlist and have any new files/changes added automatically without having to re-add the folder manually.

I figured they were opened due to the update, so I re-added some playlists and files and re-opened vlc but they were reopened again, so I figure maybe VLC keeps the folder/playlist bookmarked and autoloads it at start, so I don't have to manually expand the list.
Nope, it simply opens the playlist/folder, then removes the playlist-directory, meaning if I want to refresh their contents, I have to manually re-add them.

Note: I tried 2.28 /3.0. 0/1/2/3. 2.28 works, so this only happens in 3.0 series.
Is there a fix, this is a feature request, or do I have to stay with 2.x?

Hi
put a look in advanced view settings, the playlist category there is a drop down menu where you can choose the behavior of the folders.
But I don't know if this working because I test it and notify no change...
Good luck.

I don't know what you're saying. You'll have to be specific.
I can only assume you're talking about sub-folders behavior (the only drop-down menu in the section).

That's completely unrelated to my issue.

Playlists (.xspf) and Folder-directories show in Playlist as one single file. There are NO arrows to expand them, or anything like that; they're essentially the same thing as say and audio or video file, or some other single file.
When you open them, VLC replaces that single file, with a folder containing sub items (unless it was empty, in which case it's simply an empty folder).

When trying to open a "Folder", it will only expand; nothing is loaded.
When trying to open a playlist/"directory", files are loaded and it will only expand based on your settings.

I want VLC 3.X to not auto-open playlist/directory files in my Media Library.

The option you speak of, is for changing how VLC behaves with "folders" in the playlist.
My issue is with directories/playlist being converted to said folders.

Thanks that solves "that".
It's already disabled on 2.x (and I don't remember doing so, myself), so I believe it resets to enabled in 2.x to 3.x update.

However, I'm now noticing another issue (not related to that solution):
When opening a folder / root-directory, The sub-folders/directories are listed as single items, requiring to manually open to access the sub-items.

In 2.x, all items and subfolders inside of a folder are added/expanded automatically.
How to enable this in 3.x?

I also have this problem, Currently I've solved it by just using an old version of VLC, but the constant update reminder is annoying and I will concede that 2.x is less stable than 3.x

This folder issue ruins VLC for me and I may never ever update again unless it can get fixed. Having to manually open folders is absolutely garbage and basically makes the open folder function worthless.

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell]
@="none"

set the default entry to REG_SZ "none"
