Why no VLC 3.0.2 on Ubuntu repository?

When I go to https://www.videolan.org/index.de.html it says:

Version 3.0.2 • Linux 4,499,430 bisher heruntergeladen

But when I try to update vlc with sudo apt-get update as written here: https://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-ubuntu.html the version 3.0.1 is downloaded. Also this website says:

Supported releases
Ubuntu 13.10 “Saucy Salamander”
Ubuntu 13.04 “Raring Ringtail”
Ubuntu 12.10 “Quantal Quetzal”
Ubuntu 12.04 LTS “Precise Pangolin”

Does it mean you dropped support for new Ubuntu releases? I have Ubuntu 17.10 and currently updating to 18.04.

My question is how to get version 3.0.2 for debian os?

Hi,

VLC on Ubuntu is provided by Ubuntu and not by Videolan.

As stated on this page:

Ubuntu includes whichever VLC version was the latest at the time the Ubuntu release was frozen (typically about two months before the official Ubuntu upgrade).
Afterward, you can still get security and critical bug fixes, but no further major VLC version updates until the next Ubuntu release.
If you need a more recent version, please consider upgrading Ubuntu.

At the moment 3.0.1 is in 18.04 LTS:

https://packages.ubuntu.com/bionic/vlc

Debian also provides VLC (at the moment, 3.0.2 is in testing)

https://packages.debian.org/buster/vlc

Thank you for answer. I find it stupid to provide VLC update with new release only, especially that LTS Ubuntu versions are released each 2nd year only. I will try using debian repository. It would be good to write this information on Ubuntu website.
