getting VLC to play a Xvid AVI file

I installed VLC from the VLC SuSe 9.2 i586 rpm and all the codex' such as ffmpeg by RPM as well. how do I set the codex and VLC 0.8.3 to run a Xvid AVI. thats all I need but if you have any other settings for wmv and mp4 files then that would be nice too.

oh PS i get Audio but no video is i try to play a avi, wmv, or mp4 video
