Can I save usb camera feed to file?

I see lots on editing video files. I am new to VLC, just looking to have a usb web cam save to a file. I can see the feed from my camera and a timer counting up, I can even choose "back" and it rewinds a bit. It would be nice to even just record a still image every second or two.
