VLC not playing Multi-channel FLAC file

As the title states, I have multi-channel flac audio files that were ripped from blu-ray. The files play, but they are output in stereo, not surround. When I plug a computer into my receiver, the files play fine and in surround sound (also playing from VLC for desktop).

As an interesting aside, the files actually play from my receiver's built in network application (in surround sound), but the receiver is not very good at buffering the large stream over the network.

These are NOT Dolby encoded files, as I know there is an issue with AC3 playback on VLC right now.
