I didn't find anyhints how to get statistics of MPEG streams received in the VLC user guide, neither in the FAQ. So, how is it possible to trace rate received, packet loss, type of video flow, etc. ?

I don't know much about VLC implementation, nor much about mpeg container format or codec specifics, but my best guess is you should try the messages window under the View menu.

If that doesn't give you the information you need, there probably isn't a way currently.
