accidental opening file twice - how to exit/prevent?

Postby jimmytiel » 01 Jul 2015 08:42

win 7. latest vlc, options set to single instance...

I have an issue with "play all" option in windows, and also with accidental multiple clicks:

I observe this: My trackball buttons are a bit iffy so it is possible to double click a file twice by mistake. you can of course tell me to replace that component but I would like to understand the following behaviour:
after accidental extra clicks, VLC puts up 2 windows. 1 saying " terminated in an unusual way", and 1 showing the video, but in a quasi-wallpaper mode. .i.e. the video is locked to top left corner of monitor and has no borders, no interface controls. if I press esc I see " quit" overlayed at top right but it is non functional. If I have VLC in "open in full screen mode" ,this wallpaper like view takes over the whole screen and there is no exist route. it is not true wallpaper as other desktop icons are hidden. SO what mode is it, and how do I control how/if VLC ever enters such a mode please/

NB I was able to produce this on a different PC with normal mouse. to force it to happen I have to double click a video file and then very quickly double click again before it has opened.

PLAY ALL : I can also force it by going to any folder containing 2 or more video files and clicking "play all" in the window tool bar. this triggers an attempt by VLC to open all files leading to the situation descrirbed above. the error window, the strange mode playback, and the inability to quit. .
MORE INFO I have tried all combinations of single instance" and "single instance from file manager" settings. I mostly get an unkillable "wallpaper" video" which only task manager will close. I have also toggled video playback between direct 3d and automatic - no joy there either. In task manager - when the strange mode is playing, I see a description VLC (direct 3d). but when a normal video is playing I see the file name or video title in task manager.

so:
1. what is this strange mode & why does the quit option that it offers up not work
2. what settings will prevent vlc entering this mode and thus allow "play all" to work normally for a windows folder.

when I say "play all" I am referring to the window bar that offers: organize, include in library, share with, play all, burn, new folder

NB "play all"works fine for a folder that contains only one file!
