what is the problem now, I have downloaded the latest version

I have windows 7 pro 64 bit. I download the appropriate VCL version, the latest, 2.2.1 for windows,.

While an earlier version used to work fabulously in converting video files from .asp files it does not convert at all now. It seems to just vanish. What now? Why is there always a problem? I really would not want to depend on this because I have to have a way to download video HD video in that format but I just want to convert which it did like a champ.
I have NO IDEA what made it stop doing that. I got error message that I could not play it in windows medioa player due to missing codec, which I believe I found again. But this issue is it won't convert AT ALL.

I am open to anyone's suggestion if there is another vehicle to just convert the video file. There no audio, just video. It is however quite important. I can't have this situation where it works great for two weeks. Then will convert, but he other won't play, or now the vlc just vanishes, or crashes I guess.
I used to have to constantly re-install, but at least THAT worked.
I first had this downloaded for me rom CNET site and I believe that contained a horrible virus or trojan and I have had nothing but misery wtih my notebook since then, I am soooooo fearful of where I download this from even here. Then to have it not work?
Please can anyone help, any suggestions, what did you try? Surely there are other files than .asf which are huge. This is what ths playe is supposed to do, convert. It isn't a very complex thing. What makes it crash?
Please can someone answer? Often find more people here desperate for help than there are those who can help.
