A simpler web interface?

Postby PaulMerton » 14 Apr 2015 23:57

Is there another web interface available for VLC, or even a rudimentary package to replace the one built in?

I have a couple of problems with what appears for the web remote-control ($ vlc --control http ), from my personal dislike of JS reliant web pages, to perhaps something others might not just sigh at :)

The Web UI loads 3rd party content, I thought I had not allowed VLC to ever phone-home (or similar), but the web UI tries to load some JS off flowplayer.org. The file is missing and returns a webpage including JS from the world's biggest advertising company (the Google). It seems the mobile link also tries to load content from them.

I know the trendy things to do are to web-app things up, and to use all these free services, but they are not Free like the Free in FOSS. Web services are effectively 21st century proprietary applications, I think all necessary stuff should be served locally to keep the user in control. There are speed benefits too, and of course everything can work even without an internet connection (if core functionality revolves around middlemen, then that functionality should go. What is this, VideoWAN? :) When I play youtube videos they have been downloaded, or perhaps piped from stdin).

The animations on the UI only make the whole thing feel slow too, probably because they have to be waited for. I reload the web interface, off localhost, and there is a noticeable delay. There is some fade on the logo, and a box at the bottom slides about...... IMHO horrible fashions in design, I don't know why so few people seem to have problems with computers having artificially laggy interfaces these days? I turn off as many animations on the web as I can with local styles, but even so web designers can still JS stuff about. How the web UI takes over all keys (even ctrl-tab (cycle browser tabs) stops working) is infuriating, too.

/rant. Sorry about that
