saving cropped videos

I have searched the forums for answers but the solution evades me.

I have a HD video which I want to crop the bottom off and then save the resulting cropped video so that it will show correctly on any video player.

I can crop the video and see it play cropped but I can't find a way to save it.

I have tried the various suggested tools and preference settings but the converted/saved video is no different to the original.

Early last year I needed to do a similar operation as well as rotating the image. I seem to remember that to crop a bounding box appeared (similar to what you get in picture graphics app) and it was just a case of adjusting the boundaries and then convert/save.
