dvd srt file troubles

Hello,

I tried different computers (all Mac) with different versions of OS X but on none of them VLC can display the subtitles of a srt file on to a dvd. I also tried it with old versions of VLC and with different dvd's and different srt files. But nothing seems to do the trick ( in preferences OSD is enabled)
It only works if I first transcode the dvd to a mov or avi file.

any help would be appreciated
