DVD not playing

Postby Lekain » 28 Jul 2013 10:57

I am running VLC 2.0.7 on a MacBook Pro with Mountain Lion. I try to play a Japanese DVD, which plays perfectly on the Mac DVD Player. With VLC, only the first 10 seconds trailer plays. I tried to go to the IFO files, with the same result. Playing VOB files does not work either. Is this is a problem specific to Mountain Lion?

As a complement to my previous post, I noticed that VLC 2.0.7 on my Mountain Lion exhibits the same symptoms as above on other DVD: playing stops at the first trailer. The same DVD can be played on VLC 2.0.5 under Snow Leopard. VLC 2.0.5 does not work either on these DVD under Mountain Lion. On each test under Mountain Lion, I deleted the preferences files,to no avail.

I have a similar problem. I have received a digital download from Squarespace. On iPad it will not play the introductory 30 sec clip, although it does play the soundtrack. Squarespace say try VLC. There does not appear to be a facility to play digital downloads on the VLC that I have downloaded onto this iPad. any clues?

I'm having the exact same problem as Lekain. My DVD will play in Mac DVD Player, but not in VLC. I've tried opening the DVD in VLC 2.1.2 and 2.1.1. I'm using Mountain Lion 10.8.4.

When I use the 'Open Disc' command from the File menu, VLC opens the disc and lands on the main menu screen. I can navigate between menu screens. However, when I select 'Play all' or a specific scene from the episode list, VLC crashes immediately. After I use 'Open Disk' but before the DVD menu appears in VLC, the DVD appears as 'rdisk1' in my VLC playlist.

When I look at the DVD in Finder, I see three folders: AUDIO_TS, which is empty; JACKET_P, which contains three files with the extension .mp2; and VIDEO_TS, which contains files with .IFO, .VOB and .BUP extensions. After reading some other posts, I tried right click > open with > VLC to open the large .VOB files--500 mb to 1 gb. Several of them opened, but none played satisfactorily. One was 2 minutes of a black screen with two diagonal white lines. One showed a very fuzzy picture for a few seconds, with audio, but as the video progressed the picture fuzzed out completely and became all white.

I'm not sure if there's any other pertinent information, but I'll get it if any is needed. I'd really like to resolve this, as I'm trying to take screenshots, and wherever I look online the advice is invariably, 'Just use VLC!'

Thank you.
