I have been unable to get VLC working with a PCI capture board despite trying several different capture boards and several different Operating Systems. I was able to get it working with a USB based dongle under Linux, but the quality of the video was too poor and the latency far too great for streaming. I have never been able to get it working under any version of Windows. Part of the issue - I think - is the very arcane nature of the VLC application when it comes to opening video capture boards, especially when trying to open something other than an RF input. Ultimately I need to stream this video, but before I attempt that I need to have VLC working in Play mode with the board.
Current setup:
Windows 7 Pro 64
Asus M5A88-M Motherboard
AMD FX-6100 Six core CPU
Sabrent (Microtune) PCI ATSC / NTSC video capture board (AuviBDA8521)
BlazeDTV 6.0 (Bundled with video card)
Analog Composite Video
VLC Twoflower 2.0.7
When I reboot the system, I can use the bundled BlazeDTV software to open the capture device and play video from the composite or S-Video inputs with no problem at all. When I try to open the capture device using VLC, however, the video screen remains blank. What's more, if I close VLC and once again open BlazeDTV, it won't bring up the composite or S-Video inputs. I have to reboot the system to bring up the video again.
What values should I be using to get VLC to bring up the composite and / or S-Video input on this (or any other) capture card?
I have the capture mode set to DirectShow. I think that is correct, isn't it?
I have the Video Device set to Microtune BDA Analog Capture. I think that is also correct?
Clicking on <Configure> brings up a Properties schema with the Video Standard set to NTSC_M (which I think should be correct). It says the value of Signal Detected is 1 with the video connected and 0 with the video disconnected. It correctly finds 525 lines. Everything else is grayed out. If I click on <Play>, the video screen remains blank.
Is there something I should be changing in the Advanced options? I've tried several different things, but it's very hard to tell what effect, if any, they have, since running VLC (with the wrong options?) seems to lock up the card.
