.DAT file skips at specific parts

I'm trying to play some .DAT files and it plays it fine for the most part. But at very specific parts in the clip, it would skip for a second.

I have tried this on both Windows and Ubuntu 12.04 and it exhibits the same behaviour.
I have tried using other players and it plays the .DAT file perfectly.
I converted the .DAT file to MP4 using handbrake and VLC would play it perfectly.

Any insight on how to resolve this problem?
