static noise on SuSE 12.1

Postby bgliss » 06 Mar 2013 09:33

I am running VLC 2.05 on openSUSE 12.1 (i586).
.wmv-files are run with lots of static noise that makes it impossible to understand the audio.
The video track is displayed ok.
The audio track is performed ok by other multimedia programs, e.g. audacity.
It seems that vlc (as downloaded and installed from this site) should use another library for performing audio.
What can I do?

This is probably due to your version of libavcodec. Upgrade or downgrade it. Version 53.35.0 works fine for me on Linux.

thanks for your hint. Strangely enough, I find the following (multiple) versions of libavcodec installed:

libavcodec52 0.7.15-1.3
libavcodec53 0.10.3-11
libavcodec54 1.1-4.1 with 1.0.4-2.3 available

seems like I really messed up something.

Solved! Remove extraneous libavcodec versions and update to the available latest version
