Love the Santa icon!

Postby vlcsanta » 19 Dec 2012 19:18

Hey guys, I was using VLC today and saw the Santa hat icon and I thought it was hilarious! I made an account for the sole purpose of thanking you guys because it's glaringly obvious that you care about the community by releasing this amazing piece of software for free and taking the time to modify the icon for the holidays! I know this has been going on for years but I just caught it today :)

Also, to the people I discovered were complaining about this icon, seriously??. I cannot believe anyone would tie Santa to a religion which it isn't even associated with and then get angry and want it removed. You people shouldn't have the right to even use VLC player. To those people I have one message; grow the hell up!

In celebration of the holidays and all the work and care that the VLC team puts forth, I'll be donating towards the cause.

Happy holidays!

It's awfully cute, but of course, many of us do not celebrate Christmas. How do I disable it?

Turbine, check out this post: viewtopic.php?f=14&t=96508&start=0

And vlcsanta, I made an account specifically to complain. I'm Jewish; for many of us who aren't Christian, ubiquitous "seasonal" and "holiday" stuff* is like being told "You don't exist." "I forgot you exist." "You might exist, but you aren't important enough for me to bother about." Over and over and over. Once isn't that bad, but hundreds and thousands of little incidents add up to something that hurts. I don't care what people celebrate in their own personal lives; I just don't want it in mine.

* It's not secular; it's Christian. You just can't tell because you assume everyone is Christian by default.

Anyway, I'm glad there's a way to disable it, even if it's well buried in the menus. Yay. Caedocyon out.

How? I just updated to the latest version (2.x) but it's still there.

This is a very common problem/request. Doesn't it seem rather wise to have one of your guys produce a narrated "How-to-disable-Christmas-mode" video using VLC's Desktop cap feature, or better yet, remove it from the default skin and put it in a Christmas skin? It's a bit intrusive for 2012 culture (meaning the general global culture today, not a reference to those delusional doomsday-cult people)

... or at LEAST a screenshot in the interim of where the checkbox is? One of VLC's greatest strengths is the many checkboxes and features. One of VLC's greatest weaknesses is the many checkboxes and features.

I DID search the forum, mais, NON!... the link provided above, in which YOU replied, didn't describe jack. But SINCE you asked me to, IF you insist:

As respectfully as I can muster, how about you sit your pompous, arrogant, "hoity-toity", aristocratic french backside down and try LISTENING to your users for a change? Where the hell did you learn software engineering or usability testing?

Unrelated, to all: Would someone please remind me again that we invaded Normandy in 1945 because of Hitler, not to free the French?

Yep, and most of them love it: https://twitter.com/search?q=vlc+hat

If you don't like VLC, please don't use it. And stop bothering us.
Unrelated, to all: Would someone please remind me again that we invaded Normandy in 1945 because of Hitler, not to free the French?
And you got a ban from this forum.

For a chairman of an open source project, surely you have no PR skill, nor calm and patient attitude. I hope you react differently to other technical critics and suggestion regarding VLCplayer. For three years or more (the internet record it) your attitude regarding this Santa hat feature doesn't change at all. Can you at least add some one else in your team that can separated personal feeling to deal with any user feedback, no matter how rude of it?

If you notice, in the twitter link that you provide above, people who like the santa hat icon is the one who celebrate Christmas.

Don't bother to reply me with harsh word, I download the version 1.2. And it's not the user fault, it just how the way it work for google search. The search result show link up from the year 2008. Right in the middle argument where you scolding people around just for a simple request. So in the year 2012, i just find out you have a on-line quarrel with a lot of people for three years. It make sense if you actually enjoying this.

In my opinion, the more often you post the link to the solution, the chance is, it will shown up in the first place when someone searching it. Otherwise, that simple solution is already bury in mundane unnecessary respond.

Well, i hope you can take some time and think. Since the aim of this project is global, not the entire globe have snow in December and celebrate this week as holiday. It's kinda awkward when the programer treat it as global holiday. It seriously awkward when you start vlc player to your parent and this holiday icon appear in the vlc blank screen, what we have to say to our parents? That this software is clever, it's recognize the day when some people in the world celebrate this week as holiday (where is the new year hat?). It just happen, and from their point of view, why I installing this software to celebrate other people holiday.

So please stop and think, the difference of culture is far from only religion. As simple as it is, not all people celebrate it. It's suppose to be rain season in my country, but due to global warming, its very hot and clear blue sky. So the icon, a hat that suitable to warming the head, is kinda out of touch. Many people just request a option to disable it, they don't need to be tell to grown up, especially not in the hell.

We do what we can with the resources we have. If you don't like it, you are free not to use our project.

As there is a very simple way to disable this feature if you don't like it, we feel we have done what we should.

There is already an option to disable it... What the hell are you speaking about?

Annoying people like you are exactly the main reason why the santa hat is kept.

I just noticed the Santa/Christmas hat a few days ago, so I just wanted to say, great job and I love it! No matter what anyone else thinks, I love it. I have a son who is a programer and I know how much work it is to create this great media player, or any program for that matter, so for you who take a few minutes and have some fun to create this little Easter-egg is fantastic.

I did notice many out there that do not want to have this little special addition, and was happy about seeing the option of removing it, (I will not remove mine.) I am glad for the people that do not want it to have a way to get rid of it, but I love this type of thing, so give me more anytime!

Thank-you for all the hard work you do to create this player, it works great for what I use it for.

I'll bet you don't "celebrate" road construction. Do you want to disable the road cone icon too?
