faulty snapshot format from video stream

Postby Sean » 15 Dec 2012 05:35

Hi. I recently installed VLC on a 64-bit Win 7 OS, and it is the 64-bit version 2.0.4 Twoflower, downloaded from here. According to its "Help/About" window it was made with this compiler: gcc version 4.6.3 (GCC), and I apparently have the Qt4 interface. I decided to download it after a laborious but unsuccessful trial-and-error search for a program to use that would be easier but capable of handling my few tasks at hand. I had no such luck. I say it like this simply to indicate that I am not an expert at using video recording software.

Anyway, I think the task I have in this particular case ought to be fairly simple and straight-forward, so I am clueless as to why it does not work right. I have the program configured to play, and record if need be, a live video (no audio) stream created on my LAN with a webcam. As it streams I can watch it with VLC, and I would like to snap a still shot picture at any given point using the menu "Video/Take Snapshot". When I do this, the file does get saved in the folder I have set for it. I had it set for PNG, but when I tried to open this file with several different programs, including VLC, I get an error message saying that the format is unsupported or the file is damaged. Then I change the setting in VLC to make JPG, and the exact same results occured. :(

I have no clue how to go about fixing this problem, and I would surely welcome any advice or pointers to help towards that end. Thanks.

That's really curious. I have the same setup except that I don't use a web cam. The Video Snapshot works fine for me while playing a regular .mpg or .mts video file from my HDD. I save snaps as .jpg and usually open them with Irfanview. I will be interested to see what someone with more experience comes up with on this. I would also love to know what "Twoflower" means!

I had the same problem with the VLC player version 2.0.4 twoflowers.
The PNG snapshots were corrupted and could not be opened in irfanview.
I uninstalled the player and installed an older version,2.0.3 twoflowers, in which the PNG snapshots were correct.
Now the VLC 2.0.5 arrived, I installed it and the png snapshots-problem is solved now. :D
