Converting to MP4 - No Audio on PS3 Playback

Postby Mr-Martini » 17 Oct 2012 16:51

Sorry if wrong area, first time poster. Thanks in advance for any help.

Attempting to rip my kids DVD to MP4 for storage on USB and playback on PS3. Disc is showing wear and I am trying to preserve before it won't play. Am I the only one who thinks that these things are getting less durable?

Using VLC 2.0.3 on Win7.

I have used the Covert method through the GUI. H.264+MP3, default bit rates (I have not changed these). I am getting good video. When I play back in VLC, the mp4 works great. It does not have any sound on the PS3 or when played in Media Player.

Google has not yielded any help.

Thanks again.

I don't have a PS3, but I think you should be selected MPEG 4 Audio and not MP3.

Thanks, will try that. Also, I have done some more digging and this may be a PS3 issue. When the file is playing, the PS3 lists the Audio as ACC. I am very new to streaming and transcoding, so I am not sure if that is even relevant.

AAC is the standard MPEG 4 audio format, which is why I mentioned selecting that as the audio option. I presume that VLC mean AAC audio when they call it MPEG 4 Audio.

Hey, thanks again. I can't test this on the PS3, but the new rip works in Media Player which was not the case before. I followed your suggestion and selected MPEG4 Audio instead of MP3. I also upped the bit rates for audio and video. They were set at 0. I selected 1024 for video and 192 for audio. I hate to trouble you for more info, but will that d anything other than just up my file size? Thanks again!

It should up the file size and A/V quality but shouldn't cause any other issues unless the PS3 is real finicky about the datarates it supports. You're probably fine.
