Loss of sound when recording from WEBM file

Postby BillBald » 19 May 2012 03:40

I've been trying to use the Record function to edit video files, only recording the part I want.

This has worked well in many cases, but WEBM files are converted to AVI format and the sound is lost.

This problem may be related to another topic: viewtopic.php?f=14&t=99375&p=334297
The difference is that the source in this case is not a URL but a file already on my hard disk.

This ticket may also be relevant, but maybe needs to be edited to reflect this broader problem:

Bill,
Been playing with this for a while today and the strange thing is, if you convert the .webm file to a .avi file and play it in VLC it will record with sound just fine but I can’t get VLC to convert so I needed to use different software to do it, I know its a pain  but at least it works.

I still can’t see how to change the recorded file to anything other than .avi :(

Thanks for replying, TigerRag.

How do you convert WEBM to AVI?
Is there any free software which will do it?

I actually managed to do the conversion in VLC by setting up my own AVI profile, but resulting quality was very poor.

Can anyone recommend compatible video and audio codecs?

I am using the Free WebM Video Player to convert WEBM to AVI, it can do a load of other things too. It has loads of output options so maybe worth a try; to be honest a lot of the output options are well beyond my knowledge. If you do download it make sure you click the custom install and un-tick the two options or you will have unwanted changes made to your browser and get other stuff you don’t need. Free WebM Video Player can be found here http:// http://www.any-video-converter.com/free-webm-player.php

Thanks for the tip.

I have tried the program you mention, but I did notice some loss of quality in the conversion.

Looks like I will have to wait for VLC to be fixed, so that it outputs WEBM.

Regards
Bill

If you up the video bitrate to 3000 and the video framerate to 30, audio bitrate 224 and sample rate 44100 and see if its any better.

Yes, I got near to original quality, but with bigger file.

Looks like I have to try different settings.

Thanks for your help.
