For mac, I have no idea what we are going to do.
Well, let me know when you do, so I can change, if necessary, my icons.

Beautiful aLtgLasS, great work!

I see you decided to lose the reflection, is that Vista guidelines?
I guess reflections also aren't part of Apple HIG, maybe I should lose them too?

I wish someone would come with some proper response as to what to do to get these into VLC v1.0 final. IF that's even still possible...

I like the reflections for the Mac icons, but most windows icons don't have them. They are usually not that "glossy".

nikola23 ,

Thanks but I have already created them in Paint.NET. Paint.NET and GIMP are still the best freeware editors on the market when not paying for the superb likes of Photoshop, Photoimpact etc

My aspect ratio is already corrected from start and I think are Windows OS suitable (colour, size, style) despite only one person's opinion.

Window users please download and try to get a feel (Windows users) 256x256 - I will post converted ICO's

If colour is the issue then the diff colours can be removed alltogether for just a faint orange cone but bolder forefront image.

I am enthusiastic about contributing these icons because I have made more requests in the past and just wanted to give something back. Sorry for long messages.

I finished the Vista ICOs, you can download them from http://d-gfx.kognetwork.ch/VLC/icons/vlc_vista_icos.zip

I'm not quite happy with these but they are better than nothing.

Good work, aLtgLasS. I hope you Win guys will get some nice icons ;)

I don't have high hopes for the Mac icons, as communications seems to be lacking here.. I guess I'll replace the icons in the final myself ^_^ (as I've been doing before..)

Sorry aLtgLasS,
These icons you put forward just don't do it for me. I can see why you were more confident with these sets (the look of consistency) but they just too plain and look even worse at smaller 16x16.
Image
The aspect ratio correction at 48x48 size is a an improvement. Thanks for this current effort.

You see this is my original justification for icons with 'some type' of colour for each 5 - leaving the Generic icon (the 5th) with a matching VLC cone Orange colour.

The above pic uploaded in this comment shows coloured icons (KM Player's 2nd edition) with the others just submitted.

If anyone can submit some nice icons (look at other Media Player icons for inspiration) or even supports my badge icons to an extent then help on this topic would be nice. It's really not any difficulty at all.

I like lopoz's/aLtgLasS' icons at high resolutions - just when it gets down to 32x32px and 16x16px the information in the image starts to "fade"... i.e. becomes more difficult to identify. With just the VLC cone (the current default icon) it is easily recognisable at those resolutions.

Just as an example here's a really basic video icon (left-to-right: 48px, 32px, 16px):

Image Image Image

Original is 512x512px (well - actually SVG) but I haven't posted that as the focus is on the lower resolutions. As can be seen the 16x16px is pretty clearly a VLC video file.

Here's another basic VLC audio icon (left-to-right: 48px, 32px, 16px):

Image Image Image

Admittedly the arcs are a bit too close to the cone, and isn't that clear at 16x16px :P, however, simply due to e.g. the contrast, I think it is more recognisable than aLtgLasS' at lower resolutions.

So anyway - my suggestion is to have simpler/flatter icons for the lower resolutions to ensure that they are always easily identifiable.

Cheers, Arite.

If I get time then I can make some new icons (no 3D) but flat and stylish with colour for each 5 and the same inclusion of the centred VLC cone and will check each resolution size upon finish.

@Arite

The problem with the Mac icons is that they're less wide, so even less information can be conveyed through the 16px icons. Even Apple's own icons (e.g. Quicktime audio/video filetype icons) cannot be distinguished at 16px.

IMO the 32px icons here are still (easily) distinguishable..

Also, the icons that you show, are made square. The icons we make are a lot less wide and are can therefore contain a lot less information. (BTW, I know those are for illustration purpose, but I'm just saying that we have a lot less space than what you show.)

Agreed, however as can be seen from e.g. here, the icons at lower resolutions are different to the high resolution ones (i.e. don't need to be straight downscales of the high res ones).

Yes OK the 32x32px ones are OK - just when it gets the 16x16px it becomes a bit unclear.

Anyhow, was just saying that there could be different/modified icons for lower resolutions.

Cheers, Arite.

I agree, although the current icons have the exact same problem. Only, IMHO, they look less good than mine.

A 3rd attempt tried best at better AR size at 48x48 size. Coloured audio and video icons only for better visual distinction (although it may not be of liking by some) but left the playlist, subtitle cones as non-coloured since they only auxiliary files; the only thing left is to properly do separate 16x16 images with some idea

When signing these under GPL, is the raw image editor file source really needed? If so I have .pdn

alternative generic (text w/ drop shadow- still multi-language friendly)

Well, I guess I will be the one deciding for Windows icons.

We need 4 icons (video, audio, playlist, sub) + a raw one (the one we have now, and that will not change yet), respecting the Vista icons guidelines (I know aLtgLasS is able to do good ones). Be careful about aspect ratio of those icons.

For mac, I have no idea what we are going to do.
I've done comparions at 48,32,16. 256 should be more than fine.

I have managed to do the 16x16 very easily, I should've done before :D The 16x16 is plain and independent like what I saw on KM's icons. There is choice of 2 generic icons w/ text and plain without so whichever is decided is fine but personally I would choose the text one.

I really don't mind them going under the GPL for use just so long as some credit of me is acknowledged. Download in .zip below. More comments are welcome.

I don't like the colors you chose, but apart from that very nice. Did you create the symbols (speaker etc.) yourself?

Yes I did create.

altglass your right about the colours, I am going to do some new again later and post (much improved). I have been looking at lopoz earlier coloured versions which I liked and I liked his saturated colours

Im really sorry to all members for all these repeated replies, but doing these icons lately has gotten me excited in getting to know my image editor and other few graphical applications well.

I want to try one more 4th attempt this time not colouring of the VLC cone (admittedly colouring the cone is not more attractive) instead adding soft faded colour to the document background. I just think some type of colour looks nice but done properl;y. I will post my finsihed 4th attempt again later.

Sorry again for all the replies, preview (do you think it looks better?):
Image

[edit]
btw I will do another nicer 16x16

Last preview mock-up just to show the softer faded colours of the documents in using the playlist icon as an example.

I think definately that Yellow is nice but also red, green and the blue. Generic of course will be plain (as is) with no colour change.
Image
I'd going for Yellow=subitle Green=playlist , maybe this time the Blue= video and then that Red=audio
viewtopic.php?f=7&t=35494&start=420#p202653

The VLC cone remains the original orange and shows up nicely against these other colours, which is just perfect because I know changing the colour of the cone was not popular. I should be sure to darken each symbol to a dark grey/blackish so that each symbol shows up better against the colours as in the preview above.

[EDIT]
OK maybe no 'VLC' text for the Generic icon since the applications supports a same extension called VLC and in wanting to avoid confusion.

I think I did achive to make the colours lighter like you said and avoided saturating em. I just wanted nicer colours that wouldn't take the visual attention away from the each symbol and VLC cone on the icons. This should be it now, but will let all of you try em and judge. Myself, I am using all of these system wide with a new freeware tool called Assox.

Download Link at very bottom of post (sorry if you don't like Rapidshare)
16x16 -looks better now, just docu image and tiny vlc cone
32x32 -better aspect ratio against other standard size icons on Win
48x48 -looks really nice

I still keep the images for anyone wanting to do a Mac OS job

These are all the previews to which show the diff sizes, with more previews I snapped below from my system.
