I just installed VLC on W2k platform and when setting any video file to "always open with" VLC the file icon is the Windows "no association" icon. But it does open with VLC. Anybody know how to fix this?

Got the same problem here, I am using w2k server with all updates available, but it is a french version

When I go in File Option, File Type, I see the right icon, but it does not appear on any of the associated file. I've associated VLC to the files manually, not with the prompt after installation.

Anyone can help?

Ok, I finally found a solution!

Here we go (for the others who got the same problem).

Go in Folder Option -> File Types.
Select the target extension (ex: AVI, MPG, etc...)

From there, you should see a "Advance" button, but if you don't (as I did) click the "Restore" button and it will bring it back.

Now you've got the "Advance" button back, so click it.
From this dialog, you must:

• - select the appropriate icon:
  • Simply click on the "Change Icon" button, then select the right icon.
    To get the VLC one, select VLC.exe as icon.
  - select VLC as the application to use:
  • In the action section of the dialog, click "New" or "Modify" button.
    In the first edit box, you can customize the prompt of the contextual menu.
    It has no impact on the execution of the file.
    In the second edit box, you must select the application to use.
    Click "Browse" to select VLC.exe.
  - instruct which command to use when opening a file:
  • In the second edit box again, next to the path to VLC.exe, you
    must add "%1" (quotes are part of it, don't forget them).
    Final result should look like that (depending on the installation path):
    "C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC\vlc.exe" "%1"
    
    %1 is the file you try to open, so you could add another action
    and, instead of opening the file locally, stream the file to another
    computer. To do that, simply use the VLC commands, replacing
    the file name by "%1" (don't forget the quotes again!)
    Ex: -vvv "%1" --sout udp:192.168.0.42 --ttl 12

I hope it helped some of you to get through it. You need to do this for all file format you want VLC to play, and have an icon
I guess that the ones who have problem opening the files can resolve it the same way. After all, it is the real manual way to do it.

Thanks alot for this fix man!!! What you said did not exactly work for me without some head-scratching though: I had to hit restore(which put it back to winamp; as I'd made it a default player for awhile) then opened winamp and dis-associated avi's(what I was concerned with), then I did this one more time, and it restored the second time to the nero player; so I had to open that and do the same thing. And THEN! I went back in and avi was not there, so I created it with "NEW", advanced, and then picked the associated file type(easy).

a bit out of the topic exactly, but similarly associated as Zalan has posted.

you might decide to add even another action so that in the end you have this:

double-click a file.. -it opens in vlc(the default action)
right-click a file for the context menu.. and you have these two extra options as well:

|Skin open (open in vlc using the skin interface)

so here's the "Skin open" action, command:

..of course changing the vlc path appropriately, and enclosing that path in quotes if there are spaces(ala' Program Files directory for example).
