Teletext decoder could be possible!

Postby roglan » 04 Apr 2006 15:20

I've found a program written in C written by by Jan Panteltje.

Its a teletext decoder that can be used to transparently pipe a
full transponder transport stream through it.
It reads the teletext pid[s] it uses from ~/jpcam_pids, or from the command line.
This is intended be used together with jpcam (decoder), and xvtx-p (viewer).
The software is GNU GENERAL PUBLIC LICENSE.

It should be possible to incorporate this software into Videolan to make it able to decode Teletext pages in the Mpeg-ts stream.
If anyone wants to look at the source-code, who can I send it to?

Source has to be GPL compatible.
If it is post it somewhere public, like to some wiki because also others need Teletext support.

You could send an email to vlc-devel@videolan.org with a link to the source code.

I've missed teletext decoding in VLC since I started using it 2 years ago.
VLC is my favourite multimedia player, and it will make me very happy
if you manage to incorporate teletext, specially subtitles.

The code can be downloaded from
http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/apps/v ... -0.2.1.tgz

Another interesting project, much more complex is:

http://www.nada.kth.se/~ragge/vdr/ttxtsubs/

It appears to be a plugin for some VDR project, but if you look at the source its teletext decoding code. The source is also GNU.

This is VLC with jpvtx and xvtx.
Plus a little bit of hacking by me.

I will probably develop TTXT suppor for version 0.8.6

This is simply FANTASTIC! I really hope you can do this! What platform of 0.8.6 will you start to implement this on? Linux,Mac,PC?

Subtitles

I hope this also means we will be able to see subtitles on channels using teletext for subtitles. Care to confirm this?

Dear DJ!
Is there any possible chance that you could develop a small library or
routine of some sort that makes it possible to watch Teletext in a
separate window like the one you've got in your picture?
A pre 0.8.6 test?
Unfortunately I'm running on a windows platform :( . As I can see from the
picture, you're running linux? I guess it will take too much work to make
jpvtx and xvtx run on windows?

Sorry for digging up a month-old thread, but this is really great. What are the recent developments? Can we look forward to having teletext subtitles in VLC in the near future? It seems that lots of people are looking forward to such functionality.

My hauppauge tv card (analog) comes with a small windows app for cc (teletext) which supports scripting, and saving the text to a text file

With a bit of jiggery pokery, and some vbscript (or whatever scripting language your particular OS uses) I'm sure that we could use VLC's marquee or RSS filter to display the CC text overlaid onto the VLC video window, or even set it up to display into a separate stream using Fake: input along with those filters. That way we could have the choice of subtitles overlaid, or full text pages displayed

Of course, that would only work on hauppauge cards with that particular sw...

If you're interested then I'll see what I can do :)
