VLC doesn't play non-english titles files....

i have the 8a version and ive tried to play some chinese mp3's but it dunt work... but onc ei change the name of the file into english, then it works perfectly... is tere a way to fix this? cuz i dunt wana rename ALL of my mp3's......[/b]

I have this problem too where I can't play filenames with chinese character. The files are given correctly to Media Player Classic, but not vlc.

It would be awesome if I could play these files and the like in vlc.

This was a recent change to MPC and other programs and player are still having problems with this language.

Perhaps posting this in features requests may get more attention!

This is just supposed to work, and used to work. However charset encodings are a regular point of breakage, so perhaps some change again broke things.

Same problems with filenames containing french specific characters. Files do not play unless these characters are removed.

Small correction : playing works if I open the file through the menu, but does not work if I drag'n drop the file or click on it (using files association).

So it seems it has to do with the way Win XP pass the filename to VLC

While The DJ probably has the best answer here (at least it is a possibility).

Please be aware that the Windows system does not like certain characters in a file name like * or ? and it is possible that this is true for any language. So while The DJ is looking for some answers, it wouldn't hurt to see if you could possibly resolve some of your own problems.

I've been using 0.8.4 on Windows XP. And I've noticed that I can play .asf files even when there are cjk characters in the filename. But I cannot play any .avi files with the same.

Just reporting in that when the filename contains Japanese characters or kanji, VLC does not play the video file whether it is opened by double-click or from within VLC itself.

Both the last stable and 0.8.5-test1 exhibit this problem.

If any part of the full file path (folder names et al.) contain kanji or Japanese characters, the file similarly refuses to play. Removal of the Japanese characters makes VLC happy again.

I tried uninstall my 0.84 and install the 0.72. It works! I wonder why is it so?

Try newer test2 or even nightlies. A lot of work has been done on this in the past weeks.

Just installed 0.8.5 test 2 and no luck with japanese. turns the kanji into '?'.

I have a same problem.

With VLC 0.8.2 all's working fine... I have upgraded to 0.8.5 today and now I can't open files with space in the filename. Like "video for me.avi". I have to drag and drop the file in VLC.

So I have remove VLC 0.8.5 and reinstall my older 0.8.2 and what a surprise there's still this problem I have remove 0.8.5 with the uninstall.exe so it should be working but that's not the case.

Dunno why it isn't working anymore but I have so many files with a space characters that I wanna now if it's a new feature or some kind of bug

Hello guys,

the same with Slovak characters e.g. I even noticed, that if the file name contains a space eg. 'track 01.mp3' it will not play at all. When I rename the file to 'track01.mp3' then it playes as expected.

This and other topics regarding subtitles have been discussed over and over again. The link provided is a sticky that appears at the top of the page for this forum.

About the only thing it doesn't mention is that for some difficult languages like Chinese, Japanese, Hebrew or Arabic the font may need to be changed to a Unicode font. There are descriptions as to how to do this repeated in various posts here.

In fact if you do a search you may discover other interesting facts about the 9 or so sub formats VLC supports and how to use them.

Attention: there are two different problems with charsets on Windows. One is subtitle encoding, and is a bug with automatic charset selection specific to version 0.8.5.

The other problem is filenames with non ANSI characters. This is not supposed to work until the very latest 0.8.6-test2 (please test heavily). Even, I wouldn't expect all problems to be solved before 0.9.0 (you can try the nightly builds but this is a development version!!). The only known issue left there is that VLC won't see filenames with non ANSI characters when "playing" a directory, but they can now be opened one at a time at last.
