Freeze the last frame? Enter fullscreen before playback?

Postby parafovea » 17 Jan 2009 09:17

Hello all.

I've got two simple questions about playback details. I've been searching the net but couldn't find the answers.

Firstly
The option "Play and Stop" from the prefs is vital. I can be sure that when the video is over vlc stops and doesn't move on to the next flick. But when it stops it only shows a black screen. Would it be possible to configure the playback to freeze the last frame at end of the video?

The sudden black screen seems often a little harsh. Especially if I have just some scene from the middle of a movie. (I usually cut the right bit into a separate movie file so I don't need to worry about stopping it at the right moment.) For example, Quicktime Player freezes the last frame.

Secondly
Is there a way to open the video screen and enter the fullscreen mode without actually starting playback?

Sometimes its a bit awkward to start the playback (sound kicks in), stop it, then enter fullscreen (also jumping back to the beginning of the film) and then starting playback again.

Might seem like trivial things to many but I'm using vlc to show videos on my lectures and presentations. In an important presentation the smoother you can get the better the result.

Thanks for any thoughts you might have on this.

Since this page is the top google result for this question, I thought I'd insert the answer here...

Tools > Preferences
Shows Settings: All
Playlist > Check "Play and Pause"

I'm sorry but that doesn't work at all, the video panel still close, and it's not paused on the last frame
Any idea ?

In 2.2.4 Weatherwax the option is 'Pause on the last frame of a video' under Preferences.
If it opens 'Simple Preferences' the option is under Interface Settings > Playlist and Instances > 'Pause on the last frame of a video'.
If it opens 'Advanced Preferences' I don't know where to look, just go to 'Show settings' in the bottom left and switch it over to 'Simple'.

No idea about the second query. This page was the first google result for me as well.

In VLC 3.0.8, the setting to pause on the last frame of a video is now in Preferences > Show All > Playlist. It is a checkbox labeled “Play and pause”, with the tooltip description “Pause each item in the playlist on the last frame.”
