MPEG4 subtitles - even quicktime supports them...

Postby thommyfilm » 26 Dec 2008 10:24

hello

I really like VLC and use it a lot. We depend heavily on subtitles and I am a fan of soft subtitles. I know there are many formats that are supported by VLC. I think the best solution is a standard compliant MPEG4 file. Subtitles are fully integrated into the mpeg4 file so you dont't have to care about a separate subtitle file. In quicktime/iTunes and even on the iPhone you can select such a subtitle track via View>Subtitles.

But: This part of MPEG4 seems not to be supported by VLC? Why not???

You can find a testfile with working subtitles here:
diagonal.com/mp4/

I would also like to see a possebility to select different audiostreams/versions encapsulated in mpeg4 (also supported by qt)

cu t.

Mediainfo or Media Player Classic doesn't show/know those subtitles either. I will do the trac ticket later, when I figure out some needed details.
EDIT: Luckily MP4box enlightenment showed me the path. They are tx3g subtitles (aka MPEG-4 Timed Text) according to MP4box but if that would be true, they should work in Media Player Classic (and also in VLC). Also if I try to extract the subtitles, MP4box complains Track ID 6 is not a 3GPP text track. So I assume Apple software doesn't cooperate with specifications.

trac opened:

I've used MUXO to create the example file.

MUXO: http://forum.entropicgarden.com/
example file: diagonal.com/mp4/

the subtitles are fully supported by qt player and itunes but not on VLC.

iTunes uses QuickTime components. That is why you have to download and install them both if you want to use iTunes. I am just wondering why Apple doesn't want to support MPEG-4 Part 17 subtitles.
