WVC80N -> VLC -> WebCam Device / Ustream

Postby jared0x90 » 21 Jan 2010 16:07

Hello, let me start off by apologizing for my ignorance in streaming. This is my first real go at it so I am learning along the way.

Last night UPS dropped off my new Linksys WVC80N wireless IP camera. I took it out of the box, setup the wireless connection and put it facing out a window here to watch a bird feeder we have here. I opened the cam up in Firefox and was able to simply copy image location to get the URL of the feed it was creating...

This opens in VLC and displays perfectly. My headaches began when trying to link this feed to UStream. Clearly Ustream and most apps that allow webcams to be used are specifically looking to use the USB type that are sitting right next to your computer. I did some googling once I had seen this was the case and found only one decent solution described for my cam which was to install WebCamXP's IP Camera "filters". I gave this a shot and while I was able to get it working it has *numerous* draw backs...

1. The video is not aligned properly in ustream - it has like 5 px of black space around it on the top and left sides.
2. The video gets cropped to roughly a 320x240 space regardless of what resolution the cam is running. If it is running 640x480 you get the upper left quarter of the picture.
3. It's got all kinds of nag crap on my stream by the time I get it up on Ustream.
4. The delay and picture quality are mediocre at best even given that it is being forced to run at a lower res.
5. It doesn't save your settings despite having a save button. Every time I want to use the thing in ustream I have to open Skype *while* I have the ustream broadcaster running, then go into skype and configure the webcam from there and then it magically appears in ustream (as ustream lacks a button for advanced options the WebCam XP IP camera filters require).

Anyhow.. This got me thinking about VLC. I've used it as my video player for years now and I've always hear people talk about the streaming it can do so I thought I'd take a look and see if this was supported. Unfortunately I don't see much discussion about how to do this. Is there a way to have VLC create a "Webcam" like device that most normal apps can use? As it stands now the only way to use this cam in Ustream, Skype, etc. is to patch it through WebCamXP's IP Camera filters. Ideally I'd want to simply open my stream in VLC and then click some buttons to have it create a dummy webcam that displayed whatever VLC was playing. Is there a better way of doing this or am I doing something wrong? Thanks!

I was having the same problem. I eventually used WebCam Max to do a screen capture of the VLC player window. I works well enough for our purposes and actually not that hard to setup.. cheers
