Streaming Videos over FTP (using FileZilla Server)

Postby CS2001 » 25 Oct 2009 02:06

Hi,
i've set up a FTP server (FileZilla Server 0.9.33 Beta) on my PC today, because i want to be able to access my media from other pc's aswell.
If i try to open it over Media -> Network Stream and enter the path, it will start playing the video for half a second and immediatly close it again.
Does anyone have a idea why it doesn't work? (Log is attached)

AVI is not a "contiguous" file format, so you cannot quite stream it over FTP or HTTP

There are a few applications that let you "stream" files from FTP servers, but they either want far to much money or are buggy and old. It shouldn't be a problem as long as the server supports resume, then it would just be up to the app to resume and cache as needed.

How is avi not "contiguous", I'm not sure I understand what you're trying to say.

That is simple so untrue. Install VLC player 0.8.6i and they will work just fine over FTP with filezilla.

You can also isntall wamp that comes with apache 2.x and then you will have them over http as well. HTTP works with every vlc player above 0.8.6i just fine also. You can even rewind with the latest versions.

Well regardless of that. It would be nice to know why the latest version of VLC don't work over ftp any more?

I am having the same problem streaming video from ftp to VLC. the video screen pops up for a second then closes. I tried Media Player Classic and it worked fine, so the problem isn't the ftp server.

stabville, how are you getting MPC to stream a video from FTP? I tried it and it tries to download the video before playing.
