Audioscrobble does not work (?)

Postby b5793386 » 01 Feb 2012 19:11

Dear community,

Today I decided to return to last.fm and scrobbling. I remebered it was possible to simply enter my account information into the audioscrobbler within VLC. However, after listening to several tracks my fresh account on last.fm does not show up any scrobbles.
Did I miss something? A plugin? I use the latest version of VLC (The Luggage) on WinXP.

Cheers for any advise

*edit: Never mind. I use foobar now.

I agree - does appear to be broken for VLC 2.0 and the latest nightlies. It should say (after connecting and handshaking and stuff):

Code: Select all

audioscrobbler debug: Submission successful!
I checked with the latest 2.0.1 nightly and latest trunk build; also broken. I made a bug report:
https://trac.videolan.org/vlc/ticket/6286

It seems to have fixed itself... VLC 2.0.0 appears to scrobble correctly. Not sure what changed; is it working correctly for other Windows users too?

Cheers, Arite.

Yeh possibly, just older versions of VLC seemed to work fine when 2.0.x didn't. Anyway, no complaints :).

Apologies for the somewhat late bump, but I'm still having this problem. I'm using VLC 2.0.1, and the only messages I get on VLC are
audioscrobbler debug: Meta data registered
audioscrobbler debug: Song will be submitted.
audioscrobbler debug: Meta data registered
audioscrobbler debug: Song will be submitted.
But it never submits. Been happening for at least a week now, I've reinstalled, checked my log-in details, etc, but nothing :(

OK, does the same issue occur with the latest nightly of VLC 2.1.0? Find nightlies here:
http://nightlies.videolan.org/

If so, try an old version of VLC (just get the *.zip/*.7z version and extract) and see if that works (I tried 1.0.5 as that was a version I had):
http://download.videolan.org/pub/vlc/1.0.5/win32/

I was finding there was an issue, however now it seems to all work correctly (this is using 2.0.1 as well as 2.0.0 before) so would be interesting if e.g. VLC 1.0.5 works fine for you but 2.0.1 doesn't.

tl;dr: 1.0.5, 1.1.9 and 1.1.11 work, 2.0.0, 2.0.1, and Nightly don't.

---

Thanks for the reply and links :)

I fully uninstalled VLC and tried the nightly version, but the same thing happened. Same messages, and no submission to last.fm.

1.0.5, however, did work.

Edit: Tested 1.1.9, works as well. Redownloading 2.0.1 to re-test that...

Aaaand nope, nor does 2.0.0! I've switched back to 1.1.9 for the time being, since at least that works, and I'm fed up with Foobar.

Edit Edit: Did you know that there's numbers after 9? It's true! (thanks emeraldgirl :P) 1.1.11 works for me as well.

---

Using Windows Vista btw, if that matters.

I posted a thread regarding this on this forum also. I just noticed there was a new release 2.0.1. I've deleted my 2.0.0 and am now using 2.0.1. The issue with no scrobbling persists and my latest tracks are not shown in my last fm profile. I still have 1.1.10 which worked well as IIRC. Hope the team sees this thread and looks into the issue.

I've added another comment to my ticket:
https://trac.videolan.org/vlc/ticket/6286

Still not sure what's going wrong - it now appears to work fine for me.

Have you tried deleting preferences and cache files and then re-enabling Scrobbling with Last.fm in the preferences?

Yes, for each test, I checked the option to delete preferences and cache when uninstalling the previous version, and then re-typed my last.fm log-in information into the new one.

Just retested 2.0.0 in case it's an issue that comes and goes, but nope, back to 1.1.11.

---

Edit: I'm not sure if I'm doing this right, but here goes.

I went to http://nightly.videolan.org/build/win32/backup/?C=N;O=A, and tested a bunch of the trunk builds. Whatever my problem is, it seems to originate between the Aug 1. and Aug 8. builds.

http://nightly.videolan.org/build/win32 ... 0801-0002/ still scrobbles, but the few I tested after that, including the one the week after, don't (they just give the "Song will be submitted" message).

http://git.videolan.org/?p=vlc.git&a=se ... oscrobbler says there were a few changes made to the scrobbler on August 1st, is it possible that one of those is screwing something up?

---

Edit: Ugh I wish I knew how to code (or at least read it) :(

---

Edit: I tested this on another system, a Windows 7 laptop running VLC 2.0.1. Used a totally different song and everything, fresh install of VLC, and...nothing. Same crummy message, no submission.

So, if it ain't the computer, but it's not a universal error, then what's that leave? My Internet connection, the area/region I'm in (eastern USA), or my last.fm account I guess? Hmm, this is tough. I'm off to bed for now, I'll set up a new last.fm account in the morning, see if I can't rule that out or in, and see if older versions work on the laptop as well.

Good luck y'all :)

If this helps you: scrobbling doesn't work for me with VLC 2.x and WinXP SP3 in Germany with a last.fm account which scrobbles quite well with all my other players.

Thanks! So that seems to rule out a geographic thing, right?

Anyways, I tried scrobbling with a new last.fm account, and nope, same issue & messages, it works in 1.1.11, but not in 2.0.1.

Also tried 1.1.11 on the laptop, and it worked fine with both accounts.

I don't know if this will help you but I've sorted the problems I've been having with last.fm as follows :

1) Select Tools/Preferences. Hit the All button (bottom left).
2) In the Interface section click "Control interfaces". Select "Submission of played songs to last.fm".
3) Expand the "Control interfaces" section and select Audioscrobbler. Enter post.audioscrobbler.com for Scrobbler URL.

You'd think these would be set automatically. Or maybe something changed at the last.fm end? Anyway, it's working for me now.
