VLC won't play my blu rays

As far as I understand, BD+ is another Blu-ray protection scheme and VLC cannot play such discs. For now VLC can play AACS protected discs only. So for BD+ discs you have to use either WinDVD/PowerDVD/etc players or AnyDVD HD protection remover. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Ah, ok (well, not so ok, but ok..). I thought the errors in the attempt to play the the referenced title "Chronicle" were the same as those previous to installing the two specified files, along with the 64-bit experimental version, hence the surprise, and uncertainty as what was up. Thanks for the explanation. *The problem Title might well be weak, or worse, anyway.... (sour grapes, anyone...?).

If I go to 64bit experimental it opens a list of public files, when clicked on some of them are text files, others request to download - there's a zip file and an .exe file for example, I tried downloading the zip but once extracted I can just open VLC direct from the extracted folder, there is no install or setup phase. There is no VideoLAN folder in my program files (x86) folder either so I cannot put the .dll in there.

Just went through the problems already outlined by all you other folks with my husband's laptop, got so far as realizing he needs the 64bit version for it to work, he downloaded the .exe from that public file and in his case it didn't fix the blu-ray error, hence trying on my laptop with the zip folder to see if a clean install worked..

I would appreciate advice!

If you want to install the 64-bit version download vlc-2.0.1-win64.exe. If you just want to run it from a directory/folder download vlc-2.0.1-win64.zip (or the *.7z version). You'll need to extract the contents of the *.zip to a folder first, then run vlc.exe.

If you just want to test out a Win64 version download the *.zip version and extract to a folder. Download the 64-bit version of libaacs.dll found here and place it in the folder where you extract the *.zip (where vlc.exe is). Place the KEYDB.cfg file in %APPDATA%\aacs, run vlc.exe and try a Blu-ray disc.

If it still doesn't work then try a nightly build of VLC:
http://nightlies.videolan.org/

You'll have to put libaacs.dll in the folder containing vlc.exe again.

I have a H.P with win7 64 bit operating system. I can not get the player to play blue rays disks and I have searched for %APPDATA%\aacs, and it does not exist on my computer.
I have a file APPDATA it has three file folders in it local , local low , and roaming .
There is another file called aplicationdata beside APDATDA BUT THERE IS NO %APPDATA%\aacs in it so I have looked all over the computer , with hidden files unchecked and no folder %APPDATA%\aacs.
I went to safe mode by restarting to get access to all the files and still no file with that name. i've looked at all the user and local files for the file no luck.
Do I need to create the file and then put the keyDB.cfg file in the folder?
I need answers as too what to do I've read all the others and none will get this working. Charles

%APPDATA% is an enviromental variable which links to your current user's AppData folder. In actual fact it will link to AppData\Roaming on Windows 7 (and probably Vista).

If you enter "%APPDATA% into the Windows Explorer address bar and press Enter, or press "Windows Key + R" (to bring up "Run") and enter it there then you'll be taken to "C:\Users\[Your Username]\AppData\Roaming".

Create an "aacs" folder there (in Roaming) and place KEYDB.cfg inside it.

here's a compiled list of instructions to get VLC to play blu ray on Windows 7 64bit:

Get the experimental latest version of VLC for Windows 64bit
Currently, go to http://download.videolan.org/pub/videol ... ast/win64/ and download "vlc-2.0.2-win64.exe"

Go to http://vlc-bluray.whoknowsmy.name/
Download keydb.cfg
Use the search function in the start menu and key in "%appdata%" (without quotation marks)
This will bring you to a folder called "Roaming" (C:\Users\[Your Username]\AppData\Roaming)
Create a new folder within Roaming called "aacs" and put the keydb.cfg file into it
Download the Windows 64bit version of "libaacs.dll" and put it into your VLC directory (typically c:\program files\Video LAN\VLC\)

VLC will now play blu ray discs.

Good idea! One limitation, is that those Titles that are "protected" with "BD+" apparently will NOT play in VLC.

Does anyone know of a resource that lists this type of info ("protection" types) for Titles, especially new releases? I didn't see it at IMDb. We really don't want to be unpleasantly surprised that an eagerly awaited evening's film from NF is really just a shiny coaster for us VLC users. Thanks all!

20th Century Fox releases are BD+ and wont play with VLC even if there decrypted to HD. And releases from 2012 and newer will be hit or miss. MKB v31 are verified to revoke the host certificate and there's no public processing key.

Just got the BD of "Barbarella", and, unfortunately:
"Blu-Ray error:

So, it looks like due to these ridiculous "protection schemes", VLC can not be relied upon to play commercial, legally obtained BDs, even without their often times highly intrusive menus, and the loss of ability to play "extras". As a long time, obviously non-expert VLC adherent, that is really a shame, as it has been the best player for my uses that I have found.

As a follow-up to my previous posts, would it be permissible to have a thread on this Forum listing successes and failures of VLC to play specific commercial Bluray (BR/BD) title releases? It would be very helpful, at least to this VLC user, who would contribute to it regularly.

I can't understand a word of that link for Linux stuff. I'm just a simple man using an old XP 32 bit system. (I know. I'll be updating someday when it dies.)

But Blu-rays are a constant changing beast due to the software needed on them. So as soon as a new movie comes out, like the one I bought this week, it's software is ahead of the programs we'd use to play it. So I hope with time, software such as VLC will update their codecs or whatever they're called to read these monsters.

This won't play our Blu rays right this moment, but maybe if we keep adding to Posts, the issue will get proper attention. Or I'm wishing for the hopeless.

and a file named drl is created in the aacs folder after vlc reports the error

It's presumably 404'd as there is no Win64 build of 2.0.3 available on the download server.

You can get a Win64 build of VLC 2.0.1 from here (2.0.2 seems to have disappered):

This means the dll downloaded for libaacs is corrupted. Please take a fresher one.

Tried recopying both recommended files (64bit) into their respective places, overwriting existing files, just in case.

What doe these errors indicate, and what is the work around in VLC?

Thank you for your speedy reply Jean-Baptiste! I am running Vista-64 here. I thought I was using the experimental 64-bit version 2.01-win64 which my archive shows I last dl around 6/10/12. After reading you reply, I tried the internal updater, and it said it dl and updated to 2.02, but when I recheck it, it seems to be repeating the same update, non of which have been to 2.03.

http://download.videolan.org/pub/videol ... ast/win64/ seems to list more recent 64-bit versions, though I am not sure. Should I dl directly from there, and if so, which one?

I would advise win32 for this matter.
