VLC Freezes after using "Next Frame" Feature

When I hit pause and then use the hot key "E" to go to the next frame, it will work for five or so frames and then VLC will freeze up. I have to 3 finger salute my way out of VLC. I tried this feature after a fresh reboot and even reinstalled the program...and the issue persists? Are there any fixes for this? I'm using Windows XP, Version 2002 Home addition, service pack 2.

I'm having the exact same problem. Always have, even through several upgrades. Windows 7.
