Video BUG in VLC 1.0 playing TV Tuner files

Postby Aeneas » 10 Jul 2009 04:05

I find now that the new VLC now when playing the saved file output from the Dvico TV Tuner, that if the user mouse-clicks the progress bar to position the file play at a position after the start if file, that the player will only correctly play the Audio,
but the Video will be Frozen with the picture from which the progress was moved.

VLC Codec Details state:
---------------------------------
Stream 1 Type: Video
Codec: mpgv
Resolution: 640x480
Display resolution: 640x480
Frame rate: 29.970029
----------------------------------

This was Not a problem in the previous version of the VLC player (vlc-0.9.9-win32.exe).

VLC 1.0 continues to fail to Wait-Play when at the end of a growing live TV Tuner output file, but simply Terminates when progress bar is mouse-clicked to the end of the file.
This is a serious problem when the program is used as a replacement player for the crappy TV Tuner software software like Arcsoft which is often bundled but which lack critical features like Software preamp Volume Control.

Of course, in addition, when VLC has this Wait-Play functionality fully working, then VLC will also be able to perform TIVO-like operations on Live TV.

I see no Attach File option in this Reply menu.
I have prepared a 30 second recorded TV file which is 9.7 MBytes long.

By the way, what is the method for reverting back to 0.99 VLC version ?
I told the VLC 1.00 Installer Not to delete it, but I do not see a separate VLC directory or Shortcut for 0.99.

VLC overwrites the earlier version if you don't select uninstall.

Are you saying that if the user reinstalls 0.99, it will work ? I remember a problem about 2 years ago when that did not work and some messing around with Windows XP directories under Documents_And_Settings was necessary.
Of course, fixing the 1.00 bugs quickly would be the best choice.

That link says that the Bug is fixed.
Can that fixed version be downloaded now ?

The VLC developer writes as if he wants to discontinue support for MPEG-1, but the fact is that MPEG-1 is the only format I have found which consistently will work with the Best (by far) and Free and Ubiquitous video editor, Windows Movie Maker 2.
WMM2 can read it in, WMM2 can write it out into its own formats, and importantly, the timing of the WMM2 frame by frame selection of the beginning and length of the video clip, when written out and played back, is retained and accurate when using this video format.

For anyone who truly uses video on their desktop, as distinct from marketing people who show up on forums like this selling unproven items like H.264, that WMM2 compatibility is by far the most important factor in any newly introduced video format.
If it does not work with WMM2, the format is useless.

What is the status of Wait-then-Play (rather than EOF-reached-then-Terminate) functionality being implemented into VLC ?

1.0.1 will have it and you have completly misunderstood the developer.

1.0.1 will have Wait-Play functionality ?
That is excellent news, if confirmed.

By the way, I forgot to mention another important feature that VLC should support:
that is a Convert to WMM2 AV MPEG-1 format capability.
There are several formats for which VLC can display video and audio, sometimes uniquely.
When VLC understands an AV file, it should then be simple to throw a known AV Codec pair to MPEG-1 AV in front of that decoded content and then render that output to a file.
In fact, if VLC could output to the MPEG-1 format which I included in that 9.7 MByte file, and perform that conversion at high speed as a canned operation, that would be a major contribution to the desktop video community.

If you are really into video editing, don't use Windows Movie Maker, it has serious limitations. For MPEG-1 support, there is trac ticket for it
https://trac.videolan.org/vlc/ticket/2379

If you know of any video editor which has features anywhere close to Windows Movie Maker 2, even after all these years since the release of WMM2, I would like to hear which one and try it out.

Where is the trac ticket for the Wait-Play (Not End-Of-File Terminate) functionality ?

Wait-Play functionality should be the utmost trivial functionality to add to this program.
As the decoder reads the file, and receives a EOF (end of file) fail of the Read, instead of calling the Stop-Terminate,
it simply sits there and periodically continues to attempt that same Read.
What could be simpler than that ?

I would not consider what is in that link to be the sort of universal functionality that I have requested.
Universal functionality should be the element required to expend finite development resouces.

Might work fine for local files, but for streaming it isn't OK behavior. And it would also require changes for playlist behavior because stay is usually wanted for only last playlist entry.

Actually, for VLC receiving a stream, something that a small number of people do, this sort of functionality is already being performed, since receipt of data packets over the Internet is unpredictable with a lot of jitter.
And even fewer people generate streams.

The user could enable or disable this functionality.
Anyone enabling this functionality would of course know that the program will not automatically cycle to the next playlist entry, unless the user performs a manual right-arrow jog mouse click.

How do you get a movie imported into the Movie Maker system? When you want to make music videos of movies, how do you get the movie imported into the Movie Maker system? Do you need some device?

Under Windows XP, any TV Tuner card which contains the Composite connector on its bulkhead can record onto the hard disk from the 1 video and 2 audio pins in that connector.
Microsoft seems to have blocked the Composite Audio portion into the PC in Vista and Windows 7, apparently through simple incompetence, so recorded files contain video but no audio, when played back.
So I have continued to use Windows XP over the past year.

When I watch TV, I have numerous possible input sources including NTSC, S-Video, ATSC QAM and Component Video, but normally I am watching the Composite input to the TV Tuner card from the Composite from the Cable Set Top Box, since the Tuner device inside the Cable Set Top Box is usually much higher quality tuned across all potential 125 channels than those on any TV Tuner card.
Thus, if I choose to start recording something onto the hard disk, Composite is usually the input I am recording.

Once recorded to the hard disk, Windows Movie Maker 2, can import the data through Import Into Collections, and then manipulate the data.
WMM2 prefers MPEG-1 or WMV on input, and only outputs WMV files.
Within these constraints, WMM2 is still by far the most powerful and easy to use video editor available, and it is Free and ubiquitous.

Applications like Audiograbber claim to be able to record from one's old withering vinyl records owned for decades onto the Windows XP hard disk through the Line-In connector.
