VLC confused about video and subtitle streams

Postby gonzus » 03 Mar 2009 15:55

First post here. Let me start by thanking everyone for VLC, it is a great piece of software. I am using v0.9.8a on WinXP SP3.

I own The Lion King on DVD, which I am using for several tests (ripping to hard disk, later encoding with HandBrake). I ripped the main movie with DVDfab, keeping two audio streams (English and Spanish) and four subtitle streams (English and Spanish, with director comments). This is what IfoEdit shows:

When I open the same ripped movie in VLC, this is what it shows for audio tracks:

So, VLC is wrong about the names for these audio streams: what it shows as "Espanol" is really the English stream, and the unnamed stream is the real Spanish stream. And a minor nitpick: Spanish is written as "Español" in Spanish (notice the Ñ).

The subtitle tracks appear the same in VLC and IfoEdit for this particular movie. However, there are other movies where VLC will show one extra subtitle stream, and it gets confused about which is which. I don't have screenshots handy for this, but could provide them if needed.

Thanks again and best regards.

Are you sure the track language ID is correct in your rip? Because VLC looks the info from there.

Yes. the picture from IfoEdit shows the information for the rip, NOT for the original DVD (which is the same, anyway).

Is/are there some short sample file(s) you could share to us?

Well, I don't know if this will be enough but at least it is small... I copied all files from my rip except the VOBs, and took the first 1 MB from the first VOB (using dd). The zip file with all of this weighs 97 KB and I have placed it in http://www.diethelm.org/tmp/vlc.zip. If I drag the vlc folder (contained in the ZIP file) onto VLC and hit pause right away, I am able to view the exact same symptom for the audio stream names. And when I open the VTS_01_0.IFO file in IfoEdit it still shows the proper names for the audio streams. Is this enough?

Of course, you will have to take my word that Track 1 is actually English, and Track 2 is Español (Spanish).

Best regards.

Spoken language in track itself doesn't matter. Only the track language ID. I will open trac ticket once the trac will be online.

I am not sure I understood what you said. Did you identify the problem? Because the track shows as Español on VLC, but what you hear is actually the English track.

Best regards.

The English missing is from Audio -> Audio track is a one problem. I didn't test the file, but I assume your screenshots are correct so then also the audio track order is incorrect in VLC.
