VLC media Player version 0.8.6i on Vista

Postby PWK » 06 Aug 2008 05:06

Hi,

I have just loaded the latest i version on my vista. When I tried to play a movie I downloaded from my camera, in avi format, I can get the video but not the sound. There is no problem playing this same avi file in Windows Media Player after I have downloaded the AC3 codec.

Regards

Use tool called mediainfo and check what audio codec your AVI files use. You could also test nightlies to see if they play your files.

Hi,

Thank you for your response.

I have downloaded Mediainfo to check the file and it says that the audio codec for the file is ADPCM which I believe is a default codec from Microsoft. I conclude that the codec is installed in my system as I can play this file, with sound, using Windows Media Player.

I am also a bit confused as I understand that VLC does not need any external codecs to work.

Regards

VLC can't use external codecs. Problem is prolly your camera files which don't use standard audio encoding and that causes issues for VLC. Could you upload some sample files?

Yes I can upload a sample file but how do I do it? I do find an attach file button.

Use services like rapidshare. Or the FTP.
ftp://streams.videolan.org/incoming
If the issue is specific to a certain movie, it can help a lot if we have the movie itself. In this case please upload as much of the file as you can to our FTP samples server. Give the file a distinct name, and upload a text file with the same name in which you again describe the problem. Report this upload in your forum posting and tell us the name of your file. This makes sure we can more easily find back your sample.

Thanks. I can confirm that audio won't work. And I also made a trac ticket so hopefully this issue will be fixed one day.
