VLC Lag with x264 .mp4's

For some movies/clips i watch with VLC, such as frag videos like Surreal 3, the movie will stop playing but the sound will continue and all i see is a frozen frame of the movie. 10/15 seconds later the video will come back in, but it will be all pixelated/squary and choppy. Is there a reason for this freezing of the video?

Your machine is probably to slow to show the resolution of the video.

I do not think it is this, because i can play these files perfectly with Media Classic Player that comes with the K-Lite Codec pack. I also can play them with MPlayer. I just get lag with VLC, but i would rather use VLC than these others. Any suggestions?

set the loop filter to all and see if it helps.

This stops the lag but the quality is a lot lower. Is there a different filter or codec that can maintain the good quality but get rid of the lag?

You can't use external codecs with VLC.

Use another player if you aren't satisfied with VLC or optimize ffmpeg h.264 decoder so the speed boost will help VLC also.

If the loop filter trick doesn't help enough, there really isn't anything you can do with VLC.

Fixed it for me. I'm sticking with VLC - for now. Sort of irksome, though that with the advent of hi def most videos don't play on my phone!
